|As a pet owner, I am constantly considering the health of my furry friends. When my eldest cat started to have sneezing attacks on a daily basis, I started to worry about his well-being. What was causing him to sneeze sometimes 10 times in a row!? Worried, I took him to our veterinarian who shared that his symptoms may be caused by an allergy in the environment.
Since our cats live indoor only, I decided to investigate what could be the cause of these allergies. I couldn't find any sources at first but then it dawned on me that the amount of dust that was being released into the air every time our cats used their litter box could be the culprit! After researching online, sure enough I found that the ingredients released from litter into the air can cause allergies and even be harmful to pets or even their humans.
This led me on a search for other litter box options. Surely there had to be healthier options for our furry friends to use... my search led me to find the best, worse and definitely some weird options for litter boxes!

The Litter Box Awards: The Best, Worst and Weirdest
I have never presented an award before, but the search to find the perfect litter box for my furry family member produced some very interesting results that I am excited to share here. My hope is that the litter box that I ultimately found to be the best for the health and well-being of my pet will help other families who are on their own journey to find a better, healthier solution for their home.
Just to keep the suspense before I reveal the best one, let's start with the litter boxes that really didn't hit the mark for me in the worst category.
Worst Litter Boxes
The internet is a fantastic tool for researching products and finding reviews for products that are tried, test and true.. although it can feel overwhelming to send your search through Google and be faced with millions of findings - almost 60 million results when searching for 'best cat litter box' - no one has time to go through all of those results! From advice sharing to cut holes into plastic totes to create an inexpensive cat litter box to actual litterboxes that look like tupperware boxes, there are many litter box suggestions you may want to avoid. On the other hand, if a litter box looks too complicated with many moving parts, you also might want to take a miss on those ones - imagine the amount of cleaning that you would need to do to clean all those crevices, euck! By far the worst litter box design I discovered looked like a baby cradle (yes, you read the correctly, a baby cradle). I can only imagine the litter flying in all directions as your cat jumps in and the litter box rocks back and forth. The rocking design of this litter box seems to be present for the clean up feature, but it honestly missed the mark for me entirely. Have you come across any litter boxes you would give the award for the worst litter box? Share in the comments below to help others avoid these in their search!
Weirdest Litter Boxes
In my journey to find the perfect litter box for my allergy-impacted cat, I found some very interesting designed litter boxes. One of which I considered trying out was the roll and clean which works by separating the solids in the cat litter as you roll the unit over. Although the reviews were actually quite good on this type of litter box, I ultimately decided against it since it only works with traditional litter and might cause even more dust as you roll the unit. Another interesting design that I was not at all aware of before researching are automatic cleaning litter boxes that are now available. These option use a sensor to detect when the cat has finished using the litter box and moves metal grates through the cat litter pushing the solid waste to a receptacle that can then be removed. I'm not sure how a cat might react to seeing this litter box in action, but I thought it was pretty great that technology has helped design these litter boxes. Perhaps one of the weirdest (but also pretty cool) litter boxes I came across in my search were the ones that blended into the room posing as a planter or piece of furniture like a bench. I have to admit, I had never thought about a litter box being hidden in plain sight.. this is weird, but also quite genius!
Best Litter Box
Finally I am able to reveal the award for the best litter box! I am excited to share about this find, not only help your own cat to live a healthier indoor life, but also to be able to share my experience with other people since my family is sick of hearing me rave on about my find.
Without further ado, I present to you... [drumroll please]... the Breeze Litter System! The name says it all, this litter box system is incredibly easy to clean and maintain, with virtually no dust or smell. Sounds almost too good to be true, right? I was skeptical at first, too, even after reading all of the incredible reviews. My family has been using the system for nearly 6 months now and we have found these claims to be absolutely true. And the best part is that our cats allergies are gone! No more sneezing for him. I am so glad to have found a litter box system that is healthy for my pets and for my whole family. So how does it work? Start by watching this 15 second video and I'll share more details afterwards. As you saw in the video, the Breeze Litter System has two components: the dehydrating pellets and the cat pad. When your cat uses the litter box, the urine will be absorbed by the pad and the solids will stay on the top and dry up while sitting on the pellets. Your cat doesn't even need to bury anything, so it's a breeze for them to use, as well! In the Breeze Litter System starter pack you receive:
We use the regular size with two cats and change the pad and scoop the solids every 3 days and it works great. We have not noticed any dust since switching to this system and our floors are much cleaner since there is no tracking of litter around the house with the pellets. It took about 2 weeks to switch our three and four year old cats to the new system from a regular litter box and as soon as they started using it they had no issues at all.
I would suggest purchasing the Amazon Basics cat pad refills as these are just as absorbent but are at a lower cost point but continue with the Breeze litter pellets as they have the important dehydrating feature that makes this system so unique and easy to clean.
I highly recommend checking out the reviews from other cat owners who have made the switch to this system to see how incredible the change can be, not only for the humans who are cleaning the litter box weekly, but also for your pet who deserves a healthy place to live and breath. I am so grateful that I found this litter system and despite all of the hours spent researching the options, it was worth it to find the one that works like a charm. I hope you found this article helpful on your own search for the perfect litter box for your furry friends. All the best to you and your pets!

I'm glad you found the article helpful, Kari! I had never thought about hiding a litter box in a piece of furniture, either. :) Now I'm going to be checking people's benches when I visit their homes! haha

I am absolutely fascinated by this! My cat has gone through the ringer with her allergies in the past couple of years and she's in the process of doing allergy injections and rounds of steroids after finding out that she's allergic to 37 of the 70 allergens they tested on her. It's terrible! But she's in a cone to stop scratching and trying to use a litter box can be challenging for her. I might have to invest in something like this. I wonder if it would help make her more comfortable!

It can be a good idea to consult with a vet to rule everything out, but our vet suggested to look for any environmental irritants, otherwise our cat may need to keep taking allergy medicine for life! So glad we found the culprit and were able to make a change.

Absolutely, it's important to find a litter box that works for your kitty. Our cats enjoy burying their deposits so we placed a mat outside the litterbox to catch any pellets that might go flying. I hope you found a litter box that works for your fur baby!

As someone who's never had a cat, or really known other people with cats that well, I had no idea how much consideration went into litter boxes! This is a really detailed breakdown and I'm sure cat owners (or prospective cat owners) will appreciate it.

Thank you for your kind words, Charissa! Honestly, I have been searching for an alternative to traditional litter and litterboxes for a long time. I have indoor cats since we live in an apartment so it can be tough living in such close proximity to a pets toilet! Finding the Breeze system has been a game changer, for sure.

Honestly, you should try it! The Breeze system recommends that you change the pellets out completely after 1 month but I have been seeing how the odour control is for longer and I'm at 1.5 months with no odour. I did add some extra pellets since you end up scooping some out with the solids, but it's so much easier than all of the cleaning I had to do with a traditional litter box. Let us know how it goes if you try it!
