|When was the last night you remember having a great night sleep? While I am hopeful your answer is 'last night' the fact is that many of us are waking up without feeling rested from the sleep we had the night before. This could result from not having enough hours of sleep, experiencing a restless night, or having difficult falling asleep from worries on our mind. Sleep is an essential part of our overall health and well-being and helps to improve our overall mood and mental health but also can ease the tensions or strains we may feel in our body physically. But have you ever woken up with more pain or soreness then you had the night before? This could be a key indication that it's time to upgrade your mattress. Let's dive into a few reasons why upgrading to more comfortable mattress is important. Please note: This article does not contain healthcare or therapeutic advice. Often times we can overlook the importance of sleeping on a comfortable mattress. You may have your own personal reason for upgrading to a more comfortable mattress, such as experiencing a chronic health condition, or a recent injury. Let's explore 3 important reasons to upgrade your mattress so that you can have a fantastic night sleep for many years to come. 1 | To Reduce Environmental Allergens An environmental allergen is a something in your current environment that causes allergies such as sneezing and coughing or even allergic reaction including a rash and itching. The truth is, we are constantly surrounded by environmental allergens, even in our homes and these microscopic allergens can cause us a lot of discomfort and even health concerns. One of the most common environmental allergens lives in our furniture, including our mattresses: dust mites. These seemingly invisible allergens are actually living organisms (yep, you heard right, bugs) and although they don't bite or cause more difficult issues compared to other living creatures such as bed bugs, they can cause nasal congestion, sinus infections, headaches, and difficulty sleeping. Another fun fact? Dust mites actually feed off of our human skin that we shed so our mattresses and pillows can be the perfect environment for these critters. Using a mattress and pillow protector that can be regularly washed can be helpful, but after awhile it will be time to upgrade to a new mattress so that your health is not being compromised with a build up of these allergens. In case you're experiencing an even bigger issue with pests in your home, be sure to reach out to a licensed professional. Having a customized inspection and treatment plan is important to ensure that your home is protected from common household pests and pennsylvania exterminators can bring their expertise to help you achieve a pest free home. You want your place to be welcoming, just not for pesky bugs or rodents. 2 | To Prevent Aches and Pains Personally, this was my main reason for upgrading my current mattress. I had recently noticed that waking up was quite painful, which is the opposite of the way you want to feel in the morning! I am a combination sleeper which means that I sleep on my back but also roll on to my sides throughout the night. I would wake up on one side and immediately notice the pain in my hip and shoulder. At first I thought perhaps I wasn't exercising as much as usual since having to work from home lately, but even with increasing my fitness level, I would continue to wake up with these aches and pains which was starting to worry me. I had an epiphany one day as I was trying to figure out what was happening.. what if it's my mattress?? A comfortable night sleep is one of the main reasons for many people to consider upgrading their mattress, and even though you might not notice any sags or lumps in your mattress, consider the age of your mattress and your own experience after a night of sleep. If your mattress is nearing the end of its life (usually 8-10 years, depending on the quality) or you are experiencing poor sleep quality, these are definitely good reasons to consider an upgrade. “A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book.” ~ Irish proverb 3 | To Upgrade Your Self-Care Sanctuary You work hard. You play hard. And you deserve a space that feels like a retreat away from your responsibilities and from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Your bedroom should feel like a safe space that you can unwind and relax; a place to recharge and rest your body for the next day. Whether this means upgrading to a new mattress, or even increasing the size of your mattress, this can be a way of showing yourself that you matter. You care enough about your well-being to put yourself, and your health, first. You might also have recently expanded your family with a new partner, a child, or even a fur baby. Having extra space can help everyone feel comfortable to cuddle up and watch a Netflix movie together. Upgrading your mattress can provide maximum comfort to you and your family and can reduce the chance of experiencing health conditions. Take some time to consider your own reasons for investing in a new mattress and remember just how much time we spend catching those Zzz's or relaxing in our bed. You and your sleep matter!
