Suffering from an Eating Disorder?
5 Initial Steps to Take on the Road to Recovery

An eating disorder can feel like your life is ending, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the road. In fact, there are steps you can take to initially start your journey on the road to recovery.

Recognize the Disorder
Many people with eating disorders struggle to recognize that there is even an issue. Once you recognize the issue, the disorder starts to lose its power. Don’t be afraid to acknowledge your eating disorder and stare at it head-on. This is often the hardest step.

Talk to a Trusted Person
If you can’t trust your parents or another family member, find someone at school or even at your doctor’s office to talk to. A trusted person can help you come to terms with your eating disorder. They may also be able to hold you accountable for your actions and help prevent you from slipping up.

Look at Your Options
There are so many options when it comes to eating disorder treatment. Since not everyone is the same, not every treatment plan will be the same. If you look at all your options and find something you think will work for you, you might have a better chance at beating the eating disorder and moving on with your life.

Learn Healthy Relationships with Food
The most important part of beating an eating disorder is learning a healthy relationship with food. It’s also often very difficult. The point of beating the disorder is not to make yourself eat too much food or eat in a different unhealthy way. It’s to focus on eating as healthy recovery as possible and eating for nutrition instead of trying to use food to control your body. There are different ways you can develop a healthy relationship with food, but it’s often difficult to do on your own.

Don’t Get Discouraged
Fighting an eating disorder is a lifelong battle. Don’t get discouraged when it comes to your eating disorder and the battle you have to go through. There are different ways you can make your fight better and ways you can do things to prevent yourself from issues with the disorder. Always follow all medical advice and advice from therapists while you’re working through the issues you have with fighting you’re eating disorder.
