The best thing to do is to come up with a plan that works for you, in order to make the best of the situation. For those who aren’t familiar with the remote working model, don’t worry because we’ve got you covered. This guide will help you better concentrate on your daily tasks, even when you’re working from the corner of your bedroom.

How to Stay Focused When Working from Home

Let's explore a  few options you have of staying focused and present while working from home.

Turn off Your Notifications

It’s easy to get distracted when you are trying to focus on work. The simplest thing like a notification on your phone could prompt you to check it instantly, even if it’s just a casual text. According to this study, people are significantly distracted by their phones when studying, which is very similar to what happens when we’re working. You can try putting your phone away or turning the notifications off during your working hours. Although, the same study showed that music can help you stay focused, so feel free to have your favorite songs on while working.

Choose a Good Spot

It is known that a workplace environment can influence our performance and productivity. Therefore, it is advisable to find a spot in your house that is designated only for working—preferably one that feels comfortable to you. Once you’ve established a spot, remember to maintain a clean workspace. Not only will this minimize distraction, but it’ll also give off a sense of professionalism, which will keep you motivated to focus on the task at hand.

Dress for Success

Humans are creatures of habit. Fashion psychologist and author Dawnn Karen said we tend to associate each place and each role in our lives with a uniform. That is why working in our pajamas will not likely bode well for productivity. You don’t actually have to suit up or put on a fancy dress—you just need to wear something comfortable that will remind you that you’re still working.

Set a Schedule

In most circumstances, procrastination works against our best interests, but it’s so easy to fall into its trap. A minute of scrolling through your social media feed, for instance, could easily turn into an hour. To avoid this, you can try to set a fixed schedule, even if you’re working from home. It is equally important that this schedule consists of realistic and achievable goals. If you stick close to the schedule that you made, you’d be able to adjust to your new working habits in no time.

Take Breaks Every Now and Then

Breaks are more important than you think. While it is crucial to be productive, you should not take it too hard either. Pushing yourself to continuously work for long hours will only exhaust your body and mind. On the other hand, taking regular short breaks will ensure that you’re well-rested and energized to tackle the next round of work. You can even add these breaks into your daily schedule if you want to.
