Brain Training You Might Actually Enjoy

Give Crosswords a Try

Crosswords are a classic for a reason. They challenge your knowledge, make your brain work to find the right words and push you to recall information quickly. Instead of tossing the newspaper in the recycling bin every week, keep it and spend a little time with the crossword section. It feels surprisingly rewarding when you fill in that final word. If you never buy newspapers, you can grab a crossword puzzle book and work through it whenever you have spare time. Try not to peek at the answers too soon, because the real benefit comes from making your brain work through the clues on its own.

Learn to Play Chess

Chess is one of the best games for training your brain to think ahead. You have to plan your moves, read your opponent and remember strategies you picked up along the way. Even if you are brand new to the game, the learning process alone helps improve memory. You can join a local club, play with friends or use an electronic board or app if you prefer playing alone. Many digital options let you save your games so you can go back and see how your thinking changes over time. Watching yourself improve is a great motivation to keep going.

Use Strategy Based Computer Games

Computer games are often labelled as distractions, but many of them sharpen memory without you even realizing it. You can challenge yourself even more by noticing patterns or practicing how to remember multiple cards at once. The more you play, the better you get at recalling information without thinking too hard about it.
